Hello September!

September marks a season of change and a chance to refocus energy on fresh beginnings. Traditionally, this month symbolizes renewal and the start of a new chapter as autumn arrives, inviting reflection and growth. Its birthstone, sapphire, stands for wisdom and connection, while asters—the month’s flower—represent empathy and understanding.

The Rise of Mental Health Awareness in Georgia

Mental health challenges remain significant in Georgia. One in five adults experience mental health difficulties each year, and more than 10% struggle with severe conditions. Alarmingly, suicide is now the second leading cause of death for people ages 10–34, and nearly 40% of high school students report feeling persistently sad or hopeless.

Many face barriers to care, with 60% of adults lacking access due to financial or provider limitations. These statistics highlight a critical need for improved resources and awareness.

Mental Health Support Resource

Hope and help are available. GCAL (Georgia Crisis & Access Line) offers 24/7 mental health support, connecting callers to crisis counseling, mobile response teams, outpatient care, and more. GCAL can be reached for immediate support and to access diverse services for individuals of all ages throughout Georgia. For specialized or ongoing support, consider organizations like NAMI Georgia or local mental health centers for programs, therapy, and advocacy.

Food for Thought

As the seasons shift, let’s remember: small acts of compassion can spark transformation—sometimes for ourselves, sometimes for someone else. Take a moment to check in with a friend or neighbor, and consider how reaching out might make a quiet but lasting difference.
