Properties with Purpose

May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

May marks a time of growth, renewal, and warmth as the weather shifts, flowers bloom, and people begin to re-engage with the world around them. It’s also Mental Health Awareness Month—a crucial time to uplift conversations about mental wellness, healing, and community support.

At Help Inn Folk, we believe mental health is just as important as physical health. That's why we’re proud to partner with organizations that provide mental health services to our residents, helping them access the compassionate care they deserve on their journey toward stability and wellness.

Breaking the Stigma – A Look at Mental Health in African Communities

Mental health is still highly stigmatized in many African cultures, where it is often misunderstood or dismissed entirely. Individuals facing mental health challenges may be labeled as weak, spiritually afflicted, or even dangerous—preventing them from seeking help or speaking openly.

At Help Inn Folk, we work to break these barriers by  creating a community of understanding, dignity, and support. We advocate for education, culturally competent care, and safe spaces where our residents—regardless of their background—can begin the healing process without shame or fear.

Event Spotlight: Gwinnett Reentry Alliance

We were honored to attend the Gwinnett Reentry Alliance event this past month. A special thank you to the organizers for the warm invitation and impactful gathering.

Elijah Hunt, our guest speaker, delivered a powerful and insightful presentation on the challenges individuals face when reentering society after incarceration. His message emphasized that:

  • Access to stable housing, employment, and healthcare is critical in reducing recidivism.

  • With the right support and community, people can and do rebuild their lives.

  • Help Inn Folk is here to walk alongside anyone ready to do a 180 and create a new chapter.

We left the event deeply inspired—and even more committed to our mission of serving all who seek a second chance.

Looking Forward: Atlanta Jazz Festival

May is also a time to enjoy local events, and we’re excited about the upcoming Atlanta Jazz Festival! Whether you’re heading out solo or with family and friends, here are a few simple tips for a fun, comfortable day:

  • Stay hydrated – Bring lots of water!

  • Wear a hat  – Protect yourself from the sun.

  • Take an extra charger – You don’t want a dead phone mid-festival!

  • Most of all, enjoy yourself – The music, the community, the joy.

We hope to see some of you there as we celebrate music, culture, and the vibrant life of Atlanta.

This month, let’s reflect on how we treat ourselves and each other—especially when it comes to mental health. Let's create spaces where healing is possible and transformation is celebrated.

We’re grateful to every partner, supporter, and resident who helps us build a more compassionate, inclusive community. Help Inn Folk is here for you—and with you—every step of the way.
