Properties with Purpose

Summer in Georgia brings long, bright days—but extreme heat can also create serious and sometimes life-threatening challenges, especially for people experiencing housing instability.

During the hottest months of the year, access to safe shelter, drinking water, air conditioning, and reliable community resources becomes more than a convenience. It can be a matter of health and safety.

At Help Inn Folk, our commitment goes beyond providing support. We work to connect individuals with resources, strengthen community partnerships, advocate for stable housing, and help ensure that vulnerable members of our community are not forgotten.

This month, we are highlighting heat safety, housing stability, and the simple ways each of us can make a difference.

Staying Safe During Extreme Heat

Atlanta Expands Cooling Resources

As temperatures rise across Metro Atlanta, local officials and community organizations continue working to provide residents with places to cool down and access essential resources.

The City of Atlanta has made cooling resources available to help residents escape dangerous heat during the day. Atlanta Fire Rescue has also designated fire stations throughout the city as hydration stations where residents can access free drinking water.

Families and community members can also look for available splash pads and public swimming facilities during the summer months.

These resources can be especially important for people experiencing homelessness, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and people managing health conditions that may make them more vulnerable to extreme temperatures.

A simple check-in can make a difference. If you know someone who may be vulnerable to extreme heat, take a moment to ask whether they have water, a safe place to cool down, and access to the support they need.

If someone appears to be experiencing a serious heat-related emergency, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

Heat Safety Tips

During periods of extreme heat, remember to:

  • Drink water regularly throughout the day.

  • Seek air-conditioned or shaded spaces whenever possible.

  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing to help stay comfortable.

  • Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.

  • Check on older adults and people living alone, particularly during heat advisories.

  • Never ignore signs of heat-related illness. Seek immediate medical assistance when someone appears seriously affected by the heat.

A few minutes of awareness and a simple act of kindness can help protect someone during dangerous weather.

Housing Matters Every Day

Extreme heat is only one of the challenges facing people without stable housing.

Across Georgia, rising housing costs and limited access to affordable housing continue to create difficult circumstances for individuals and families. Someone may be working but still struggle to keep up with rent. Others may be navigating life after incarceration, living with a disability, aging, or rebuilding their lives after a period of instability.

Without stable housing, everyday challenges can become even harder.

Housing can affect a person's ability to maintain employment, access healthcare, manage daily responsibilities, and build a more secure future.

That is why housing matters every day—not just during a crisis.

At Help Inn Folk, we believe housing is more than a roof over someone's head. It provides a foundation for stability, dignity, independence, and hope.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to have a safe and stable place to call home.

How You Can Help

Creating stronger communities does not always require a large donation or a major commitment.

Sometimes, meaningful change begins with something simple.

You can make a difference by:

  • Donating bottled water and essential supplies during periods of extreme heat.

  • Volunteering with local outreach and community-support efforts.

  • Sharing information about cooling resources and available services.

  • Checking on neighbors or community members who may need additional support.

  • Supporting organizations working to provide housing assistance and essential resources.

  • Encouraging others to learn more about housing instability and the challenges facing vulnerable members of our communities.

When we look out for one another, we build communities where people have a better chance to thrive.
