Properties with Purpose

As we step into July, many of us begin to feel the full rhythm of summer. The days are longer, the sun is stronger, and across the country, communities gather to celebrate Independence Day on the 4th of July — a day rooted in the ideas of liberty, opportunity, and the pursuit of a better life.

At Help Inn Folk, this month serves as a meaningful reminder: true freedom is not just about fireworks and flag-waving — it’s about access, safety, dignity, and the ability to thrive.

The Hidden Crisis: Youth Homelessness

Each year, thousands of young people across the U.S. experience homelessness — many of them silently, without the support or visibility they need.

In Georgia alone, it’s estimated that more than 3,300 youth are unhoused on any given night. Nationwide, that number rises to over 4 million youth annually who face unstable housing, including sleeping in cars, on friends’ couches, or in unsafe environments.

Some key facts to consider:
  • LGBTQ+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than their peers
  • A large percentage of youth experiencing homelessness come from foster care or juvenile justice systems
  • Many face barriers accessing education, healthcare, employment, and emotional support
These are not just statistics. These are sons, daughters, students, dreamers — young people with potential, caught in systems that failed to protect them.

What Freedom Really Means

As we celebrate Independence Day, it’s important to expand our definition of freedom.
Freedom looks like:

  • A bed to sleep in without fear
  • A stable address to put on a job application
  • The safety to imagine a future and believe in it
  • A community that sees them, values them, and shows up

Help Inn Folk is committed to ensuring that justice-involved individuals and vulnerable adults — including the elderly — have access to safe, stable housing and compassionate support. Because no one should be left to navigate homelessness alone.

How You Can Help This Month

July is a time of celebration — but also a time for reflection and action. Here's how you can make an impact:

Volunteer: Your time could mean the world to a young person in need.

Raise Awareness: Use your voice to advocate for better policies and protections.

Practice Kindness: A small gesture — a conversation, a meal, a connection — can go a long way.

Final Thoughts

This July, as we light sparklers and gather with friends and family, let’s remember that freedom without shelter isn’t freedom at all. Every child and young adult deserves the foundation of safety — not just the idea of opportunity, but the actual tools to build a life.
